A river is more than a line on a map or an element of the landscape. For us as architects, it is a living organism that defines a city's identity and shapes the direction of its development. Our commitment to designing waterfront spaces was recently recognised by filmmakers from the German broadcaster rbb. In the documentary Dokumentation Deutschland 2025, our colleague, architect Beata Szulgowska-Burzyńska, guided the international crew through the heart of Wrocław's post-industrial transformation.

The blue Robur on the Oder trail

Directed by Johannes Unger, the film is a remarkable journey. The rbb crew, travelling in an iconic blue Robur bus, set out from the sources of the Oder in the Czech Odrzańskie Mountains, tracing the river's course to its mouth. When they reached Wrocław, their attention turned to how a city that once turned its back on the river now draws its greatest strength from it.

Beata Szulgowska-Burzyńska appeared as an expert and guide, using projects delivered by our practice to illustrate our philosophy of reconnecting the river with the people who live alongside it.

Olimpia Port and Browary Wrocławskie — two faces of revitalisation

In conversation with Reinhard Rogge, Beata emphasised that the transformation of post-industrial sites along the Oder is one of the most significant urban processes in contemporary Wrocław. 'Designing along the Oder is, for us, a dialogue with history and nature. We do not seek to dominate the river, but to invite it into the heart of our projects,' Beata Szulgowska-Burzyńska noted during filming.

The rbb documentary focused on two key Wrocław projects:

Olimpia Port — An example of creating new urban fabric on the site of a former river port and dispersed industrial uses. Our aim was to design a neighbourhood that fosters a way of life rooted in proximity to water. The marina, jetties, and promenades bring residents into direct contact with the Oder, creating a waterfront neighbourhood where the river is woven into everyday life.

Browary Wrocławskie — A project defined by respect for the historic fabric of a waterfront site. Here, new residential and commercial uses have been introduced within the industrial heritage of a former brewery. A site closed to the public for decades is now opening up, inviting people to experience its full potential. We showed the film crew how the brick walls that once served production now form part of the urban experience, creating a distinctive atmosphere of a 'city within a city'.

Why the Oder matters to us

As a team at SRDK STUDIO, we understand that architecture has the power to revitalise degraded spaces, repair the urban fabric, and contribute positively to social regeneration in cities. For us, Wrocław — together with the Oder, its canals, and the city's other rivers — is the axis around which we build community.

Every waterfront project is an opportunity to:

Extend green corridors and existing pedestrian and cycle routes across the city.

Create spaces for rest and recreation that strengthen community resilience.

Preserve biodiversity and support the development of local ecosystems.

Reinforce the unique character of Wrocław as a city of a hundred bridges, whose heritage is one of reconciliation and coexistence with the river.

Reclaim areas that were inaccessible to Wrocław's residents for decades and reintegrate them into the social fabric of the city.

Our participation in the rbb documentary is a significant recognition and confirmation that the direction we have chosen as architects is being noticed and valued beyond Poland's borders.

We invite you to watch Dokumentation Deutschland 2025 (produced by rbb, December 2025) and to discover, with us, a Wrocław that has fallen in love with its river once again.

Beyond the Oder, beyond Wrocław

At SRDK STUDIO, we have designed numerous projects oriented towards the river. Across our portfolio, we have designed numerous projects that bring rivers into the urban fabric and the daily life of residents. These include the Heyki ongoing development in Szczecin,  since 2025; a completed residential scheme on the River Bystrzyca in Wrocław's Stabłowice district; and two phases of River Point on Kępa Mieszczańska in Wrocław.

The Heyki project on Szczecin's Kępa Parnicka is at a critical stage of construction. We designed 387 apartments and over a dozen commercial units. The tallest section of the building will reach seventeen storeys (55 metres).

The design and delivery of this scheme represent a major engineering challenge due to its island location and extremely difficult ground conditions. The entire development is founded on piles ranging from 9 to 15 metres in length. We also navigated complex approvals with the railway authority and Polish Waters. Despite numerous obstacles, the project is nearing completion, and construction is progressing at a satisfactory pace.
